“You follow blindly. In the end, all you are is blind,” Jessica Chastain is told in a new trailer for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” The biopic sees the two-time Oscar nominee portraying late televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, charting her rise, fall, and redemption.
Along with her husband, Jim (Andrew Garfield), Tammy believes it’s her “mission to help people — anyone who is hurting or they feel like they’ve been left out.” The ’70s and ’80s saw Tammy and Jim rising from humble beginnings to create the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park.
Though Tammy insists that “faith isn’t political,” when she’s pressured to take on the “liberal agenda” and the “homosexual agenda,” she does embrace the fact that faith is profitable. “Serving god don’t feel like it should be a money-making opportunity,” her mother observes.
Chastain received Oscar nods for “Zero Dark Thirty” and “The Help.” “Ava” and “It Chapter Two” are among her more recent credits. Her upcoming slate includes star-studded spy thriller “The 355,” scheduled for release in early 2022, and Lucía Puenzo’s “Losing Clementine,” a portrait of a tortured artist that’s currently in pre-production.
