Trailer Watch: Margot Robbie Embraces the Fierce Goddess Within in Cathy Yan’s “Birds of Prey”

"Birds of Prey"

Margot Robbie is anything but a damsel in distress in a new trailer for “Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.” Following an ugly breakup with the Joker, Harley Quinn (Robbie) claims that she’s “back on her feet” and “ready to embrace the goddess within.” That goddess is nourished by cheese in a can and a good cry, but the breakup doesn’t sideline Harley for too long — she has other matters to attend to. A lot of people want her dead, and one adversary in particular, the Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), is a major threat.

Harley begins to realize that she’s “not the only dame in Gotham looking for emancipation” when she meets a number of women who are also being hunted by the Black Mask. “Unless we all want to die very unpleasant deaths, we’re all going to have to work together,” Harley tells the ragtag group.

Robbie received an Oscar nomination for “I, Tonya.” She can currently be seen in “Bombshell,” a drama that tells the story of how the women of Fox News took down their predatory boss, Roger Ailes. “Once Upon a Time …. in Hollywood” and “Mary Queen of Scots” are among her other recent credits. Robbie’s upcoming projects include “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig’s live-action story based on the iconic doll, and “Marian,” an action pic about Maid Marian from Robin Hood folklore.

“Birds of Prey” hits theaters February 7. The “Suicide Squad” spinoff is written by Christina Hodson (“Bumblebee”) and directed by Cathy Yan (“Dead Pigs”). Rosie Perez, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Ella Jay Basco co-star
