“Women have minds and they have souls, as well as just hearts,” Jo March (Saoirse Ronan) declares in Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women.” “I’m so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for.”
As the trailer underlines, the March sisters have a variety of dreams that each seem to be individually fit for. Based on Louisa May Alcott’s novel of the same name, Gerwig’s highly-anticipated adaptation follows the March family as the girls grapple with love, societal expectations, and growing up.
While Jo and Amy (Florence Pugh) pursue the arts, Meg (Emma Watson) finds happiness in marriage and Beth (Eliza Scanlen) stays close to home. Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, and Timothée Chalamet round out the cast.
Denise Di Novi, Amy Pascal, and Robin Swicord serves as producers.
Gerwig was originally hired to rewrite the script in 2016. She gained directorial control of the film following “Lady Bird’s” critical success, which garnered Gerwig’s first Oscar nods for Original Screenplay and Directing. She recently signed on to co-write the live-action “Barbie” project starring Margot Robbie.
Ronan also received an Oscar nom for her work in “Lady Bird.” Her previous credits include “Brooklyn” and Josie Rourke’s “Mary Queen of Scots.”
Just last week, Watson teamed up with Time’s Up UK to create a free legal advice hotline available to women experiencing workplace sexual harassment. This is the only hotline of its kind in the UK.
“Little Women” hits theaters this Christmas.
