Trailer Watch: Toni Collette and Her “Dream Horse” Race Against the Odds

"Dream Horse": Bleecker Street

Toni Collette leads her small, struggling Welsh community to the national stage in “Dream Horse,” an upcoming inspirational pic based on a true story. A new trailer sees Jan (Collette) declaring, “I need something to look forward to when I get up in the morning. I’m going to breed a race horse.” The bartender and grocery store cashier has little money and experience in the field, but she’s determined to make the dream come true.

Despite being told that breeding a race horse is typically done by “wealthy professionals,” Jan persists, and rallies 19 other people in her village to chip in on a monthly basis. Each has an equal share in the horse, whom they christen Dream Alliance on account of the fact that “he’s our dream, and we’re all in it together.”

The odds are stacked against Dream Alliance — he’s more than a little “rough around the edges,” and there’s “less than one percent chance he’ll ever win our race.” Dream Alliance’s chances at the race track are slim, but the horse unites the 20 villagers who share ownership, giving them a sense of purpose and camaraderie.

“We lost our jobs, our community — even our pride — and then Dream came along and reminded us what life was like when you have hope,” says Jan.

Dream Alliance was the subject of Louise Osmond’s “Dark Horse,” a documentary that took home the Audience Award in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at Sundance 2015.

Collette won a Golden Globe and Emmy for her lead role in “The United States of Tara,” which ran for three reasons on Showtime. She received an Oscar nod in 2000 for “The Sixth Sense.” “Knives Out,” “Unbelievable,” and “Hereditary” are among her more recent credits. The former, a murder mystery, is in theaters now. Her upcoming slate includes “Pieces of Her,” a Netflix series that depicts the aftermath of a random act of violence in a quiet Georgia town.

“Dream Horse” races into theaters May 1.
