Rita Moreno, Lorde, Katy Perry, poet Amanda Gorman, and Warner Bros. Television Group chairman Channing Dungey have been named Variety’s 2021 Power of Women: Los Angeles honorees. They will be recognized for their philanthropic work at a live event at the Wallis Annenberg Center on September 30, Variety has announced.
Each honoree will be featured on the cover of Variety’s Power of Women issue and receive an NFT of their cover. The Power of Women issue will include the annual Women’s Impact Report, which spotlights 50 women who made a mark in entertainment and media this year.
EGOT-winner Moreno is being celebrated for her work with RotaCare Bay Area. You can catch her next in animated series “Maya and the Three” and the big-screen remake of “West Side Story.”
Lorde will be honored for her work with climate justice org 350 Aotearoa. A two-time Grammy winner, Lorde’s latest album, “Solar Power,” was released last month.
Perry is being recognized for her arts charity, Firework Foundation. The pop star and “American Idol” judge will kick off a Las Vegas residency December 29.
Gorman is being honored for her collaboration with WriteGirl, a writing and mentoring program that aims to empower teen girls. Gorman herself is an alumna. She became a household name after reading her poem “The Hill We Climb” at President Joe Biden’s inauguration.
Dungey is being recognized for her work with the Children’s Institute. She is the first woman to run TV operations at Warner Bros.
“Variety’s return to a live Power of Women event is especially meaningful, as we strive to amplify the impact of the vital causes championed by our honorees,” said Michelle Sobrino-Stearns, president and group publisher of Variety. “We will come together safely to highlight the exciting, groundbreaking work done by our honorees and all the women profiled in our Women’s Impact Report.”
“Despite the extraordinarily challenging time in our world, the passion that these honorees continue to have in their philanthropic work is incredibly admirable,” added Amy Winter, executive vice president and head of programming for Variety’s Power of Women partner Lifetime and LMN. “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Variety in celebrating the honorees and all the powerful women in media.”
